Child of Hitler: Germany in the Days When God Wore a Swastika
Published in Paperback by Jende-Hagan Co Booksellers (April, 1985)
Author: Alfons Heck
Average review score:

Excellent book
I think a book is good if it is thought provoking, enjoyable reading, written in an easy-to-read style. Although the style I found not so easy to read, I found this book very thought provoking and enjoyable. I was able to identify (somewhat tenuously) with this Nazi zealot. I was able to feel that "there but for the grace of God (went) I". This, despite the fact that his twin brother was not as zealous as he, that he saw his best friend taken away as a subhuman Jew, that even the people of his small town knew about concentration camps (what did he think went on there?), and that he witnessed a proud old German Jew WWI veteran, who had lost his leg in that war, punched in the nose till blood spurt forth merely because he complained that he could not get into the truck due to his missing a leg. I wish the author had written somewhat about how he managed to rationalize away these things he witnessed directly. But then, what can he say? We all want to see ourselves as superior to others and must work at learning that the ugly, the short, the blacks, homosexuals, women, the crippled, the retarded, the mentally ill etc. are just as good as we are. Certainly there are plenty of prejudices present here in the USA also and if we had gone through what Germany went through prior to Hitler's ascendancy, we might also be susceptible to a leader such as he. At any rate, I found this honest personal history very enlightening. One example: he says "I wish I could shoot the bastard who killed them (his dog and horse)" to which the General replies, "Nothing wrong with a desire for revenge." This sentiment seems so normal on the face of it, but he was a Catholic and don't they teach, "Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord"? I'd like to think an American general would say to me, "My boy, war is hell. They kill our loved ones and we kill their loved ones". At any rate,I thought this was a great book. I would recommend it for a book group, so that members would be prompted to discuss the issues it raises.

A Hitler Youth evolves into a Master storyteller.
I should have read this book first, but I stumbled onto Mr. Heck's Burden of Hitler's Legacy in my local library. Mr. Heck was 17 years of age when his country was defeated on March 10, 1945. It took him more 30 years to begin to come to terms with what Hitler did to Germany, Europe, and the millions of people who lost their lives, which includes the 6 million Jews, yes, but also the millions and millions of men, women, AND children who died because of Hitler's determination to be all powerful in the world. There were also those millions who lived on, after the war, who would have to adjust to the results of Hitler's need for power.

Mr. Heck shows us that Hitler prepared the children of his "beloved" Germany to fight for his vile beliefs and thought nothing of the impact his hatred had on these kids. One of the saddest things that I thought about as I read this gifted writer's treatise about the Hitler Youth movement was the waste of this man's talent. He should have been writing all his life. He should have had the FREEDOM to develop the talents he was born with. Read this book and weep, as I did, when I read Mr. Heck's final paragraph in this powerful, true story of the Hitler Youth. For me, what Hitler did to the children of his country, there are no words to describe what I felt. Just writing this review makes me cry.

Mr. Heck, if you are still with us, I hope you will continue to write and publish. And I hope you have peace at last.

Man muss diesen Buch lesen
As a student of the Second World War I am very critical when it comes to the books I read over the subject and their sources. Heck's account is nothing short but a must read on the subject. I believe this work is as important as "The Diary of Anne Frank". Most books over this period usually concern themselves with portraying the Germans as monsters and sadists but Heck really gives us an inside depth into the Nazi mentality, especially the Hitlerjugend. In the end he makes the assertion that most regular Germans were the other victims of Hitler besides the Jews and as you read the book you begin to see on what he grounds he bases this claim. The book is a fast read, easy to follow, rich in detail, and very touching. As my German title suggests, "one must read this book"!

Day Care Days
Published in Hardcover by (September, 1999)
Authors: Mary Brigid Barrett and Patti Beling Murphy
Average review score:

Kids love it.
This beautifully illustrated book tells about the day in the life in a toddler as he prepares for and goes to day care. The vivid illustrations are full of life and children love looking at them. The story is full of warmth and tenderness. The kids I teach at the preschool I work at love comparing our child care center to the one in the book. This is a great book for any child care center or any family who has or is preparing to use a day care facility.

Thoughts from a teacher...
I am a toddler teacher always looking for great new books to read at circle time - this is it! The story follows a simple format easy enough for 2-3 year olds in day care to understand. The illustrations are vibrant and easy for children to identify with. This is a wonderful book that lets children know that their world is important to us and that the emotions they feel are natural and quite common. This book is requested by my students on a daily basis!

A favorite in our house!
Beautiful illustrations highlight this book! The rich colors and bold designs are warm and fun. We particularly like the twist on traditional gender roles as Mom goes off to work while Dad does day care drop-off and pick-up, and cooks dinner to boot!

Andrew McGroundhog and His Shady Shadow
Published in Hardcover by Pelican Pub Co (December, 2000)
Author: Peter J. Welling

A great book for kids
Rarely has a book so captured the essence of childhood than Andrew McGroundhog and his Shady Shadow. I remember when I was a child and can vividly recall bedtime stories with my parents. The books back then were simplistic and did little to enhance my dreams. But this book, full of vibrant illustrations and a wonderfully woven yarn of a tale, is exactly what a young child needs to read before bedtime. On an educational level, the author introduces Scottish terms and includes a short glossary in the back of the book for easy reference. My granddaughter was enthralled on the first reading of this book (since read to her many more times) and with another grandchild on the way I know the enjoyment will continue. Buy this book for your young loved ones.

Charmingly illustrated and highly recommended
One day, Andrew McGroundhog climbed up Hadrian's Heights to go fishing. As he was climbing, he repeatedly heard someone cry out and found that it was his shadow. His shadow was upset about being dragged up the mountain, dunked in the water, and stepped on by a pony. Andrew's shadow wanted the Andrew to hibernate like other groundhogs because winter was too cold for shadows. Andrew then wondered when he could stop hibernating when his shadow said he would gives a "thumbs-up" if it was springtime, or would bonk him on the nose if it was winter. Even now, if the groundhogs don't see the thumbs-up, they sleep for six more weeks. Written and charmingly illustrated by Peter Welling, Andrew Mcgroundhog And His Shady Shadow is a thoroughly entertaining and highly recommended addition to any personal, school, or community library picturebook collection for young readers.

What a fun book!
I bought Andrew McGroundhog for my niece of 6 years and she loved it. Not only does the author introduce an intriguing and original story about the origins of Groundhog Day, he also supplies a plethora of artwork on each page that compliments the story. (Many books for children add art as an afterthought but McGroundhog is equally balanced between story and art.)

This is very appropriate for young children who are just beginning to read or enjoy having books read to them. The short glossary at the end of the book is the proverbial cherry on top of this fine accomplishment. Mr. Welling deserves every accolade he receives.

Helpful, Fast and Easy!
This book was really helpful. I learned a lot about AOL that I didn't already know. Illustrations were very helpful too.

EXCELLENT RESOURCE
This book is a must have next to your computer. It tells you how to get started online and how to use AOL for checking stocks, sports scores, email and getting pictures online. I refer to it all the time.

EASY TO UNDERSTAND
Finally a book out there that is easy to follow about getting online. It is well-written and clearly organized. I was already able to email friends, but "Wired in a Week" taught me how to do even more -- like checking my stocks, instant messaging and so much more. Buy it--it's worth it!

Around the Majors in 60 Days
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Ray Bergman (30 July, 1997)
Author: Ray Bergman
Average review score:

Everybody's Dream
I can remember my dad and I discussing a similar trip after I graduated. Ray Bergman, however, had the gumption to do it, and do it right. I enjoyed every fleeting chapter as Ray worked his way across North America visiting all of the 26 major league ballparks in his MLBC. Any baseball fan finds themself craving the taste of Ray's unbeatable hot dog of Dodger Stadium or the street sceen on Yawkey Way outside Fenway Park.

I've never been a fan, however, of Won Ton Soup.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME....
I had the pleasure of meeting Ray at Border's book store here in Sacramento and hearing his story besides reading it. I even got him to autograph a baseball. I have always said "if I win the lotto I will go to a baseball game.....in every stadium in the MLB circuit..." Well, Ray, surely accomplished that...now it is my turn. Great stories. Thanks Ray for writing it.

If you love baseball, you'll love this book.
Are you a baseball fan? If so, you should not miss this book. This is a view of baseball you can only appreciate if you have ever experienced a warm summer home game,in a familiar ballpark, playing hookey from work. Ray Bergman has, obviously, been there,,done that!

Mr Bergman's book is full of information that would be of interest to a typically "statistics" oriented baseball nut. He writes with humor, data and a passion for the game.

Truly an "under fifteen bucks" well spent.

Attitudes of Gratitude: How to Give and Receive Joy Every Day of Your Life
Published in Hardcover by Conari Pr (17 November, 2000)
Author: M. J. Ryan
Average review score:

Portable, Yet Profound
The ideas in this book are presented in a series of essays. Even if you only read a few pages a day, you'll learn something valuable. I found the quotes used at the beginning of each section to be very inspiring, and have copied several of them into my journal. The book is a perfect size to be easily carried in a knapsack or purse if you want to read a section a day as a daily meditation. Overall, this book has been helpful to me in my quest to begin practicing an attitude of gratitude.

A life changer
A lot has been said about having a "positive attitude," but this is one of the first books I have read that actually shows you how to accomplish this and experience life as a series of everyday miracles. I love this book and have given it as a gift several times. A must read.

A Lesson to learn in every short passage...
I love this book more than any other that I own. The reason is that I read one passage every night before I go to sleep and it gives me so much to think about in improving my life. I limit myself to reading only one per night so that I can concentrate on the points of the particular essay of the night. I am almost to the end of the book and plan to begin rereading it and continuing to do so until I have the messages embedded in my brain and heart!!! This book is for everyone--I recommend you buy more than one copy and give them as gifts because I don't think you'll want to lend your copy out!!!

Born on a Rotten Day: Illuminating and Coping with the Dark Side of the Zodiac
Published in Paperback by Fireside (February, 2003)
Author: Hazel Dixon-Cooper
Average review score:

Let your Grouch out!
Hazel Dixon-Cooper, a member of the American Federation of Astrologers, has whipped-up a witty & telling indictment of just how manipulative & aggressive we all can be - no matter what our sign.

It's rather relieving to find your favorite people's signs & read up on what grouches they can be. After you've laughed at them, take a look at your own!

Each sign has a worst-case headline, followed by some academic data before serving up tasty morsels such as Dream Job & Key Phrases. Onto "Approach with Caution" & "If You Love One - Man...Woman"; "If You Are One..."; "It's All Relative" - family; "Office Party" - work relationships; "Can't We All Get Along?" & "Tips for Emergencies," ending with a list of infamous grouches born under each sign.

The dark side of the Zodiac has long needed such illumination - all monsters become less fearsome in the bright light of humor, & those upbeat booklets we consume at the checkout stands, do need a reality check. BORN ON A ROTTEN DAY fits the bill nicely!

Just too good...
This book is just too good. I find myself asking new people I meet what sign they are so that I can look them up and see what I'm getting myself into. Also, it's the best gift $10-or-under gift I've found in a long time.

Great writing, great style, and the author really knows people. Fun, light read but you can really get a lot out of it.

Hilarious look at astrology! Scarily accurate....
I bought this book out of curiosity. I already own a number of astrology books, and needed something with a more "light" touch. Well, I have to say, this book made me laugh, and laugh, and laugh! I will be one of the first to admit, that the author pretty much described the "dark side" of my zodiac sign to a "t"! I have shared several excerpts of this book with my friends, and they all agreed with the descriptions of their signs (after much howling and peals of laughter!) I recommend this book to anyone who likes astrology and humor.

Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash
Published in Paperback by Scholastic (June, 1980)
Author: Trinka Hakes Noble
Average review score:

a funny book for kids under 12
This book, "The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash," is a great book for young readers. This book is both funny and interesting in the minds of the little ones. It can also be used for a book for readers who have just learned to read. This book is about a field trip to a farm with an elementary school grade. It starts off when they have just got home and goes through the trip backwards. The illustration are used great to show what is being said when the family is talking. A parent with the child who wants to read, this is a must have book.

Fond memories down on the farm
It's been a long while since I read this book and I can still remember the day I lost it babysitting many years ago, but the vividness of both the unique ceativity of the author and the fresh, discriptive illustrations are still etched in my memory. The tale of the most eventful school excursion in history will entertain children of all ages(!). Highly recommended, both for concept and quality. Will definately capture the imagination of children. Can't believe I'm now buying it again for my niece!

A wonderful Story!
This is a remarkable book and my all time favorite children's book. The illustrations are exceptional making the entire story seen and come to life. All three of my children have this story memorized, as it is mother's favorite. Then in the first grade the reading book their class used has this story in it. This is silly, fun, a wonderful picture book for the young, and a great beginning reading book for the child just learning to read. Also a very delightful book for the reading parent, you will laugh, as the story is set so matter of fact as the mother is asking her daughter how her field trip went at school. A truly wonderful book!
